Kolbar

Kolbars are semi-legal porters who transport goods across the Kurdistan Region mountains between Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria.

They climb almost ten thousand feet high, carrying up to 150 pounds of goods on their shoulders under extremely dangerous circumstances including freezing temperatures and being shot by border forces in exchange for about 10 to 20 dollars per person. They are from crowded families within some cases 6,7 children and mainly live in Kurdish provinces which are considered as the poorest areas in Iran.

due to the economic climate in the region alongside the ongoing sanctions, the proportion of educated young individuals, women and children has increased among kolbars drastically.
